Chapter Sixteen

Strong, calloused hands warmed her cheeks. Jake’s kiss wasn’t a soft peck. It wasn’t a let’s-see-how-our-mouths-mesh kiss. It was an all-in, cannonball-in-a-freezing-lake kiss. No hesitation. A full-on aggressive, can’t-and-don’t-want-to-breathe kiss.

Blood rushed to Melanie’s head and veins when his tongue commanded her to open and take what he was giving. And man, oh, man, most women would’ve fainted to be touched by those lethal lips. Yet, as expertly as Jake kissed her—and he was topping the charts—he made her lose her breath, but not her heart.

Pulling away, she stared at her lap. He tilted her chin to meet his intelligent, feline eyes. A defeated sigh escaped his lips. What could make Jake the Great sound defeated?

“I had a feeling, but I wasn’t sure. I thought if anyone could break the look of worship you gave him, it would be me.”

“Huh?”

“You’re in love with Damien. Everyone knows it except him.”

Melanie’s mouth popped open, beads of sweat forming along her forehead. “Am I that obvious?” She rubbed her knees. I can’t believe everyone knows!

“Yeah, you are. The good news is I think he feels the same way.”

Melanie shook her head, unwilling to believe him. “Why did you pursue me if you knew?”

“Because when I saw your eyes on him like you would crawl over broken glass just to be close to him, well, I thought I’d do anything for someone like you to look at me that way.”

Running a hand through her curls, she stood, too embarrassed to meet his eyes. “Believe me, there are plenty of women willing to look at you.”

“Yeah, because of my money and my looks. I’m tired of groupies wanting me because of what I can offer them. I bet if Damien were a window washer, you’d still feel the same.” Jake rose and pulled her back to the couch. “Let me ask you the same question. If you love him, why did you accept a date with me?”

“I had the same notion as you. If anyone could get me over Damien, it’d be you. And I guess, well, please don’t hate me, but I kinda wanted him to be jealous that I was out with someone else.” Her eyes fixed on the wood floor.

“Why don’t you tell him how you feel?”

“I tried once, but he didn’t take me seriously.” She pressed her hand against her eyelids in a silly attempt to suppress the tears determined to spill.

“What happened?” Jake pulled her to his chest. She breathed him in. Nice. Too bad she couldn’t feel more.

“I visited Damien when he was pitching for Florida State. He was a junior, and I was just finishing up my freshman year at UGA. My boyfriend, Roy, had just broken it off with me. I think he grew tired of me putting off a physical relationship, but I wanted Damien.”

She moved away from Jake’s arms, stood, and paced the room. “I was determined to tell Damien how I felt. I was so nervous I had a drink before I went to his place.
